LaCie Network Space: unable to upgrade firmware through OSX
If you bought your LaCie Network Space (NS from now on) about half a year ago, you may or may not be aware that there is a new firmware update. The upgrade was not as easy as I expected.I downloaded firmware version 1.1.8 from here. And proceeded to follow these rather simple instructions.
But I kept getting an error and it was really frustrating.
As you can see from the error message, after starting the update process, the NAS does not reboot into update mode, and the error is displayed. I tried this countless times and always this error appeared.
Quite by chance I then got it to work, by closing this window right after the NAS went down for reboot:
This window is the culprit which prevents the NS from rebooting into update mode. The problem is one of logic:
1. you have to launch LaCie Network Assistent
2. In LNA you have to click on "update"
3. This opens a new window that enables you to start the update process
4. But the first window remains open and lists the NS.
5. When the NS tries to reboot, this first window starts to look for the NS to list it (as shown in the picture) and this prevents the NS from going into update mode.
So make sure to close this window right before you start the update process!
Good luck and hopefully someone can confirm this solution as well.

Hi there! I came across your blog via your link to my website grumbling about the NetworkSpace.
I had numerous issues also trying to update the firmware (from Windows) with the same error. I even contact LaCie, whose advice was initially “try doing it again”, which of course I had tried. I followed your steps above and it worked a treat. The one thing to be careful of on Windows is that the NetworkSpace admin tool also shows an icon in the system tray. Firstly I waited for the device to reboot then shut down the app completely. This update failed.
I then repeated the process, running a ping against the NetworkSpace. As soon as the pings failed and I heard the device shutdown, I just closed the window, leaving the NetworkSpace app running, and a few minutes later, the update was successful. Thanks for the info!

Just tried the above, I now get further than before but it gets stuck on stage 3 of 3, but it never seem to finish and I end up pulling the power on the device.
Anyone got anyideas?

HI Dan,
Make sure it is not opening up any windows in the background (behind any window you are currently viewing), I had that happen a couple of time. That’s all I can think of at the moment.

Hi,
I have a Lacie Network Space 2. It says it has system version 1.0.2.
Do you know if there is an upgrade for the Network Space 2?

Hi cognitivecombine
I tried it with LaCie Network Assistant 1.4 & 1.4.1 & 1.4.2 on OSX10.4.11 and it is not even able to unarchive the capsule (that I got at lacie.com/..NetworkSpace-update-1.1.8.zip ; I unziped it shure .. but then its a unmarked .tar).
Maybe this “you must have LaCie Network Assistant 1.3 Mac/Win installed” is true? but where do I get that? Or what NetAssist & OS Versions were you using?

Hi, i have a Lacie Network Space 2 and have the same problem.
But i use windows 7.
Looking at the LaCie website I saw that there is an update for my device.
The problem is LaCie Network Assistant when loading new files for the upgrade and the procedure starts, I can close the window behind, but it is useless because the program is still initiated in the tray bar.
If I close the program from the tray bar the update process is interrupted and I can not update.
I was thinking that those who programmed this software does not even try them, otherwise they would see immediately that something is not working.
This update consists of three steps, though I do like Rich did in the first comment, when the device turns off and I close the LaCie Network Assistant, it is not updated because they do not complete steps 2 and 3 and restarted normally run without any update.
Does anyone have a solution to this problem?

I can confirm that updating Network Space 2 ver 1.02 to the latest 1.2.5 version keeps failing using LaCie Network Assistant 1.4.2.
Following tips from above I get to step 3 “Your device is rebooting and will reappear in a moment.” but nothing happens. The device is blinking blue light (now it’s been like that for >1h).

Hi all – having the same problem (on Windows 7) Has anyone had any luck with resolving this yet? Kinda dreading resorting to LaCie support for help so I thought I’d check here first…
thanks

In case you haven’t noticed, Lacie have posted this solution. http://www.lacie.com/au/support/support_manifest.htm?id=10451&guideid=10747
Either they snuck it on there in the last few days or I didn’t notice it before.

I’m a little late to the upgrade party but what eventually worked for me was this:
- Windows XP (failed miserably on Windows 7 ever time)
- firewall disabled
